We are extremely proud to announce that our founding partner, Edward L. Weiner, is a recipient of the Virginia Governor’s 2020 Volunteerism and Community Service Awards.
Gov. Ralph Northam said, “With these awards, we recognize the spirit of volunteerism and celebrate the exemplary service of individuals, groups, and organizations that have made significant contributions to their communities and the lives of their fellow Virginians. This year’s honorees embody our shared values of compassion, empathy, and kindness, and we should all strive to follow their examples.”
Ed was nominated for his work to support equal access to justice for all Virginians. “During my 40 years of practicing law and raising money for great causes, I have had the chance to meet many remarkable people doing remarkable work across Virginia. I am very honored to be among this year’s recipients.”
In 2001, Ed founded Jazz4Justice, a partnership between the legal community and jazz programs across the Commonwealth. Annual Jazz4Justice concerts raise funds for local legal aid organizations, and music scholarships at local universities.
Through more than 40 Jazz4Justice concerts, Ed has helped raise over $500,000 to provide legal aid to thousands of low-income Virginians facing civil legal issues, such as domestic violence protective orders, custody disputes, illegal evictions, unlawful foreclosures, and denial of benefit. In supporting local legal aid, Jazz4Justice helps to ensure that low income Virginians receive legal counsel and representation that they need, but cannot afford.
Each May 1 since 2001, Weiner, Spivey & Miller has sponsored the Annual Law Day “Weiner Roast” to celebrate the “rule of law” in the U.S. More than 750 attorneys, judges and community members from across Virginia and the Metro area gather at the firm’s to celebrate our democracy over hot dogs, root beer floats and popcorn. The Weiner Roast raises funds for the Fairfax Law Foundation and local legal aid.
