E-bikes are everywhere in the DC metro, from busy downtown streets to the surrounding suburbs, and while they make commuting faster, they also come with risks. Here are the most common types of e-bike accidents in the DC metro, the risks they carry and what you need to watch for when you ride.

Car door accidents with an e-bike

Dooring ranks as the number one cause of e-bike crashes in the DC metro. Drivers create danger when they open car doors into bike lanes without checking. Because the impact happens suddenly, you crash or get thrown into traffic before you have a chance to react. Protected bike lanes cut this danger by more than 50 percent, but in many parts of the city, bike lanes still run directly alongside parked cars, which keeps the risk high.

E-bike Collisions with motor vehicles

Collisions with cars cause the most severe e-bike injuries in the DC metro, often at intersections or during lane changes. Distracted drivers, speeding and failure to yield create situations you cannot escape and the size and speed difference between a vehicle and an e-bike make these crashes especially dangerous. More than a third of reported e-bike crashes involve motor vehicles. Across the District, officials logged nearly 5,000 cyclist crashes in the past decade, with most ending in injury.

E-bike crashes involving pedestrians

Pedestrian crashes happen often in crowded DC metro spaces like crosswalks, sidewalks and popular trails. Even at lower speeds, a sudden collision injures both you and the pedestrian. Hotspots near Metro stations, federal buildings and the Mount Vernon Trail see these crashes regularly. Regional data shows pedestrians and cyclists together account for over 30 percent of traffic deaths in the DC metro area, which underscores how vulnerable you are in busy shared spaces.

Protecting yourself after an e-bike crash

You lower your risks when you scan ahead for doors near parked cars, ride defensively around intersections and slow down in pedestrian-heavy areas, but crashes still happen. When one does, act quickly: get medical care, document what occurred and learn what legal steps you can take. By moving fast, you strengthen your chances of recovering physically and financially, and you give yourself a clearer path forward after an accident.
